What type of counselling would be suitable for me?
There are different therapeutic approaches and they all have a place.
Psychodynamic Counselling
Psychodynamic counselling explores the root causes of the problems and the emotions that underlie behaviour, this is about deep exploration of the past and the unconsious and bringing it into the conscious this helps people to reconnect with their past in a meaningful way, as a result the benefits and effects of therapy are considered to be more permanent and lasting, this is known to be a more long term therapy and a slower process.
Person-centred Therapy (also known as "client-centred" counselling)
Person-centred therapy focuses on an individual's self-worth and values. Being valued as a person, without being judged, can help an individual to accept who they are, and reconnect with themselves, person centred is offering a non judgemental space where a client can really be heard and seen and understood.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is typically used to treat issues that originated from trauma, though it's starting to be used more widely for issues such as depression and anxiety and PTSD, the therapy involves recalling the distressing event/feeling and aims to reduce the impact it has on you so you don't have the same disturbing feelings linked to the event. EMDR can be helpful for working with: Fear, anxiety and phobias,Traumatic experiences related to post traumatic stress, illness, pain.
The Rewind Technique is different from other imaginal exposure therapies because no details are disclosed to the therapist Hence the treatment is known as "closure without disclosure" and is like EMDR effective in treating trauma and PTSD.
What is Relationship Counselling?
Relationship counselling (also known as couples counselling) is an effective form of talking therapy.
Sessions take place in a space and look to improve communication and resolve issues within a relationship. In contrast to counselling for relationship problems, which can be undertaken solely through individual sessions, couples counselling is a term applied to talking therapy for two people within a relationship. Can also be helpful for siblings, parent and child/teen. Having open and honest conversations in a safe space can really support you to learn how to communicate in a more calm and compassionate way.
Typical of sessions, much of the work you do will take place within the counselling room itself. However, it’s common that the counsellor will ask you to complete ‘homework’ in between sessions. This may be in the form of specific tasks or to discuss a topic together at home.
How do I get started?
You can either call me or email me and we will set up your first session, during this session we will talk a little bit about what you would like to get from counselling, you can also decide if you think I am the right counsellor for you, we will also look over a contract then set up following sessions if you decide you would like to continue.
There is no definite amount of sessions you have to sign up for, counselling is about your own personal journey so you make the decision on what suits you best.
